Academic staff are required to undertake teaching and research. Their titles include Professors, Readers, University Senior Lecturers, University Lecturers and Assistant Directors/Senior Assistants in Research. Affiliated and Associate Lecturers are appointed to provide additional teaching.

Research staff are University employees engaged primarily in research. Those whose appointment is on a fixed term basis are known as "Contract Research Staff". Contract Research Staff funded directly from an external source (e.g. Research Councils, charities, government departments and the private sector) are normally appointed to one of the following positions: Research Assistant, Research Associate, Senior Research Associate, Principal Research Associate or Director of Research.

Academic-related staff
are to be found in all University institutions. Appointment of those carrying out administrative, computing, technical, library and other specialist roles is normally to one of these offices or posts.

The University's Assistant staff carry out essential supporting functions, such as clerical, secretarial, technical and manual occupations.

Assistant staff are appointed by Heads of Department, according to the rules of procedure laid down in the regulations.

The rules regarding the appointment and employment conditions of all University Staff are defined in Statutes and Ordinances and in Personnel policies.
